This site

This site is all about Marklin.  Mainly about the construction of my layout, but I’m hoping to also add some other Marklin-related content of general interest.

If you are looking for something in particular, let me know!

My name is Richard.  Yup, it really is.  I’ll also answer to Rich, Ricky, Dad and “oi, you!”.  I was born and grew up in Germany.  My first experience of Marklin was my granddad’s layout which only came out at Christmas time.  My brother and I would spend all the time we were allowed with it.  I could still draw the track plan.  My dad purchased a used layout when we were a bit older; this was dismantled but everything was kept.  The base boards would occasionally be set up and a random track plan laid out loosely, only for it all to disappear after a few weeks.  I even remember setting it up on the balcony once – boy did that M-track get hot in the sun!

So this is where my Marklin roots come from.  I now live in the UK, but it’s still Marklin for me.  My brother split our collection back in 2004 or 2005 or so and sent over “my share”.  I still didn’t have the space for a permanent layout, but I purchased a digital controller and started converting my collection.  I’m mostly done with that now, but there’s always room for further enhancements…

In 2017, I finally got the space to build a permanent layout in the loft / attic of the house.  That’s where the title of this site comes from.

What is it with the ETA rail car?

Nothing in particular.  I just think the front is a friendly face and looks cute.
